Step-by-step instructions for performance-ready hair and makeup

Prepare your dancer for the Ringwood Ballet Group annual concert with our complete hair and makeup guide. This page provides clear, step-by-step instructions for creating a professional ballet bun, achieving neat performance-ready hair, and applying stage-appropriate makeup for all ages. Whether you’re a new dance parent or an experienced performer, our tips help ensure every dancer looks polished, confident, and consistent on stage.

Perfect ballet hair

Cross Plaits - Levels 1, 2 & 3

If you can bring your child with their hair done that would be much apricated! Or if you need assistance, please bring supplies (listed below).

What you’ll need:

  • Hairbrush

  • Four Hair ties (including two thinner elastics)

  • Bobby Pins

  • Hairspray

  • Hair net (matches colour of child’s hair)

Step 1

Brush out hair and make  a centre part down the head.

Step 2

Make two pig tails in line with the crown of the head and hairspray to stick down any fly aways. 

Cross plaits instruction step 1 and 2: part the hair in the centre and put into two high ponytails.

Step 3

Plait each pig tail tying it with thinner elastics and hairspray any fly aways.

Ballet cross plaits step 2: plait both pig tails so you have two high pony tail plaits, one on eithe side of the head.

Step 4

Cross plaits towards each other (reference photo) and bobby pin securely.

Step 5

Bobby pin in remaining ends around the plaits. 

ballet cross plaits step 5: pin the hair to make the cross plaits neat, tucking loose hair beneath the plaits.

Step 6

Wrap a fine hair net that matches hair colour and pin securely.

Step 7

Hairspray any remaining fly aways and you’re done!

High Ballet Bun - Foundations

If you can bring your child with their hair done that would be much apricated! Or if you need assistance, please bring supplies (listed below).

What you’ll need:

  • Hairbrush

  • Hair ties

  • Pins (we recommend using bun pins)

  • Hairspray

  • Hair net (matches colour of child’s hair)

Step 1

Brush out hair and brush over part.

Step 2

Make a high ponytail on the crown of the head in the centre.

High ballet bun step 1: brush hair backwards to hide the part.
High ballet bun step 2: make a high ponytail on the crown of the head near the centre

Step 3

Twist ponytail and tightly wound in a spiral shape making a flat bun shape. 

High ballet bun step 3: twist the ponytail tightly and wrap it around making a flat bun shape.

Step 4

Pin flat bun down securely using pins of your choice (we recommend bun pins).

High ballet bun step 4: pin the flat bun down securely.

Step 5

Wrap a fine hair net over the top of the bun and pin securely.

Step 6

Hair spray any remaining fly aways and you’re done!

Stage Makeup

Foundation – 1 shade darker than skin tone  

Eye shadow – 3 Shades – Dark Brown, Beige and White/Cream. No Shimmers please.  

Blush – Brick/Terracotta red, not pink or bright red.

Lipstick – Red (cherry red)

Powder – pressed or loose  

Eyelashes – from Level 6 up – medium length

Eye liner – Liquid is recommended – Black.

Mascara - Black

NO HIGHLIGHTER OR LIP GLOSS PLEASE
